Step-by-Step Guide to Become a Chartered Accountant (CA)

Becoming a Chartered Accountant (CA) is one of the most prestigious career goals for commerce students in India. A CA is not just an accountant — they are financial experts who handle everything from auditing and taxation to business strategy and corporate finance.

If you are serious about pursuing this challenging yet rewarding profession, here’s a complete step-by-step guide from Vishesh Academy of Commerce, Hisar, to help you understand the process, eligibility, exams, and skills required to become a successful Chartered Accountant.

1. Who is a Chartered Accountant?

A Chartered Accountant is a certified professional who manages accounting, taxation, auditing, and financial management of individuals or organizations.

In India, the CA course is regulated by Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, a statutory body established under the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949.

A qualified CA can:

  • Work with top companies and MNCs.
  • Offer consultancy in finance, audit, and taxation.
  • Start their own independent CA firm.
  • Serve as CFO, financial analyst, or corporate advisor.

2. Eligibility to Become a CA

You can start your journey toward becoming a Chartered Accountant right after Class 12th (Commerce stream preferred).

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must have passed Class 12th from a recognized board.
  • Can be from any stream (Commerce, Science, or Arts), but Commerce students have an advantage due to subject familiarity.

After Class 12th, your first step will be to register for the CA Foundation Course with ICAI.

3. The CA Course Structure

The CA course has three levels:

  1. CA Foundation
  2. CA Intermediate (CA Inter)
  3. CA Final

Let’s go through each stage step-by-step.

Step 1: CA Foundation Course

Overview

The CA Foundation is the first step toward becoming a Chartered Accountant. It tests your basic understanding of accounting, business, and economics.

Eligibility

Students who have passed Class 12th can apply for CA Foundation.
Registration should be done after Class 10th, but you can appear for the exam only after passing Class 12th.

  2. Business Laws and Business Correspondence
  3. Business Mathematics, Logical Reasoning, and Statistics
  4. Business Economics and Business & Commercial Knowledge

Exam Pattern

  • The exam is held twice a year — in May and November.
  • Paper 1 and 2 are subjective, while Paper 3 and 4 are objective (MCQs).
  • Passing criteria: Minimum 40% in each paper and 50% aggregate overall.
