The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) has officially announced the restructured syllabus for the Company Secretary Executive Entrance Test (CSEET), applicable from the February 2025 session. This new syllabus aims to build a stronger foundation for future Company Secretaries by focusing on communication, accounting, economics, law, and management.

CSEET 2025 Exam Pattern
The CSEET 2025 examination will be held over four days, covering four major subjects.
- Day 1: Business Communication – 100 Marks, Subjective Pattern, Duration: 3 Hours
- Day 2: Fundamentals of Accounting – 100 Marks, Subjective Pattern, Duration: 3 Hours
- Day 3: Economic and Business Environment – 100 Marks, Subjective Pattern, Duration: 3 Hours
- Day 4: Business Laws and Management – 100 Marks, OMR-Based Pattern, Duration: 2 Hours
The examination will be conducted in centre-based (offline) mode three times a year — February, June, and October sessions.
Eligibility: Students who have passed or are appearing in the Senior Secondary (10+2) examination are eligible to appear for CSEET.
Nationality: Only Indian nationals can apply.
Detailed Paper-Wise Syllabus
Paper 1: Business Communication
Objective:
To test candidates’ understanding of English grammar, vocabulary, and effective communication in a business context.
Key Topics:
- Essentials of Good English: Grammar, vocabulary, idioms, synonyms, antonyms, one-word substitutions, sentence correction, comprehension, and summarizing.
- Communication Concepts: Meaning, significance, principles, process, and types of business communication; digital and oral communication; listening skills; barriers and etiquette (social, telephone, business meeting, meal).
- Business Correspondence: Drafting of letters, reports, memos, emails, notices, agendas, and minutes.
- Common Business Terminologies: Terms defined under various laws, financial and non-financial terms, and commonly used abbreviations.
Paper 2: Fundamentals of Accounting
Objective:
To develop a clear understanding of basic accounting concepts and principles.
Key Topics:
- Basic Concepts and Principles of Accounting: Scope, assumptions, and valuation principles.
- Accounting Process: Bookkeeping, journal entries, ledgers, trial balance, and rectification of errors.
- Bank Reconciliation Statement: Meaning, preparation, and need.
- Depreciation and Amortization: Meaning, methods, and accounting treatment.
- Preparation of Final Accounts for Sole Proprietorship: Trading, profit and loss, and balance sheet.
- Partnership and LLP Accounts: Goodwill valuation, admission, retirement, death, and dissolution.
- Introduction to Company Accounts: Issue, forfeiture, re-issue of shares, redemption of preference shares, and debentures.
- Accounting for Non-Profit Organizations: Income and expenditure, receipts and payments, and preparation of the balance sheet.
Paper 3: Economic and Business Environment
Objective:
To assess understanding of micro and macroeconomic concepts with a focus on India’s economic and business ecosystem.
Part A – Economics (50 Marks):
- Basics of Demand and Supply and Forms of Market Competition: Theory, elasticity, and equilibrium.
- National Income Accounting and Related Concepts: GDP, GNP, NNP, NDP, domestic income, disposable income, and per capita income.
- Indian Union Budget: Components of fiscal and capital budgets, and fiscal deficit.
- Indian Financial Markets: Overview of the Indian financial ecosystem, banks, NBFCs, capital market, and financial institutions.
- Indian Economy: Agriculture, manufacturing, and services sectors; balance of payments; and foreign investments in India.
Part B – Business Environment (50 Marks):
- Entrepreneurship Scenario: Government initiatives and entrepreneurial growth.
- Business Environment: Features and factors influencing economic, political, legal, and technological environments.
- Key Government Institutions: NITI Aayog, SEBI, RBI, MCA, IBBI, CCI, NCLT, NCLAT.
- Global Environment: Role of WTO, World Bank, OECD, OPEC, and other global organizations.
- Environmental Governance: Responsible business conduct, sustainability initiatives, and SEBI guidelines.
- AI and Business Environment: Evolution, types, and usage of AI in businesses.
- Corporate Governance: Concepts, principles, frameworks, and case studies on governance failures and successes.
Paper 4: Business Laws and Management
Objective:
To impart fundamental knowledge of business laws and management concepts.
Part A – Business Laws (60 Marks):
- Introduction to Law: Meaning, significance, and sources of law.
- Elements of Company Law: Nature, types, management, and shareholders.
- Elements of Contract Law: Essentials of a valid contract, termination, indemnity, guarantee, bailment, and agency.
- Law Relating to Partnership and LLP: Rights, liabilities, registration, and dissolution.
- Law Relating to Sale of Goods: Essentials, conditions, warranties, and rights of unpaid sellers.
- Law Relating to Negotiable Instruments: Types, duties, liabilities, alteration, crossing of cheques, and demand drafts.
Part B – Business Management (40 Marks):
- Introduction to Management: Nature, scope, features, and management styles.
- Functions of Management: Planning, organizing, staffing, directing, coordinating, reporting, and budgeting.
- Principles of Management and Modern Approaches: Fayol’s principles, Taylor’s scientific management, and modern leadership styles.
- Management Knowledge for Company Secretaries: Application of management concepts in professional practice with case studies.
